What matters

On the one hand, customers expect faster deliveries. On the other hand, the diversity of variants and miniaturization pose great challenges for logistics and warehouse management. Mobile data capture plays an important role in this context. Against this background, we are discussing which criteria are to be considered when choosing a barcode scanner.

1D and 2D Barcodes đź”—︎

Choosing an MDE scanner is largely determined by the type of barcodes that are to be read. Today, 1D and 2D barcodes are the most common devices. 1D barcodes are one-dimensional and consist of bars and blank spaces. However, the volume of data storage they allow is comparatively small. They are still often used today in goods and warehouse management. If barcodes are to store more data, 2D barcodes are more suitable. 2D barcodes consist of rectangles and squares and can store much more information. One of the most famous examples of 2D barcodes is the QR code. How to find the right barcode type.

1D and 2D Barcode Scanners đź”—︎

In the simplest version of 1D scanners, the barcode is read directly from the surface using laser beams. Laser scanners are well suited for scanning 1D barcodes from greater distances. In a more advanced version, 1D scanners are equipped with an imager. With the imager, an image of the barcode is first captured and then analyzed. One advantage of this is that even many damaged or worn barcodes can be scanned without any problems.

To scan 2D barcodes, you need a mobile scanner equipped with appropriate technology. 2D scanners are usually equipped with an imager and can also read 1D barcodes. In addition, they allow omnidirectional barcode scanning, i.e. from different sides and directions. Many MDE scanners also have a camera that can be used to detect damage.

Transmission Technologies đź”—︎

Bluetooth, WLAN as well as UMTS and LTE are the usual data transmission standards for MDE scanners. Bluetooth and WLAN are well suited for data transmission within the warehouse or company. Bluetooth is relatively easy to set up and economical in terms of energy consumption. In contrast, setting up WLAN transmission is more complex and the operational energy consumption is higher. However, you can benefit from a much greater range. UMTS and LTE are particularly suitable when data is to be transmitted directly outside the company - e.g. to the cloud.

Keyboard Layout đź”—︎

The keyboard layout of MDE scanners varies between numeric (only digits) and alphanumeric (letters, digits and special characters) versions. There are also physical keyboards and touch screens. Physical keyboards are considered handier compared to touchscreens when it comes to entering large amounts of text. In the field of Windows and Android scanners, however, touchscreen keyboards are becoming more popular. Lower susceptibility to wear and tear distinguishes them from their physical counterparts.

Operating System: Windows vs. Android đź”—︎

Another important aspect is the operating system on which an MDE solution is to run. There are two main alternatives here: Windows and Android. Both have the advantage that most users are already familiar with them from everyday life. Windows is older, more mature and currently more widespread than Android. Android, however, is currently gaining more and more importance. Android has the advantage of flexible energy management, for example, which can save electricity costs. Whether Windows or Android: An important factor in the decision should also be the compatibility with the existing software with which data is to be exchanged. In this context, the deliberate restriction of operating system functionalities using kiosk mode, is also recommended. This can increase employee productivity, prevent incorrect entries and minimize the risk of loss.

Device Robustness đź”—︎

Compared to offices, conditions in and around warehouses are tougher: There are often concrete floors and higher working heights. In some cases, it is also necessary to work outside, in rough weather, in deep-freeze warehouses or in dirt and heat. Therefore, you need to ensure a corresponding robustness of the MDE devices. This includes a housing that has a high drop resistance. Furthermore, there are protection classes and certifications that certify a scanner’s special resistance, for example against the penetration of solid foreign bodies or water. For example, a device with protection class IP-65 is protected against dust and, to a certain extent, against water.

Handle Shape đź”—︎

The shape of the scanner handle also plays a role. Most barcode scanners today have a pistol grip. This handle shape is well suited for scanning large quantities of items. However, you only have one free hand. If you need two free hands, you should consider a ring scanner. This scanner is attached to the wrist and finger so that other work can be done with both hands.

Summary and Outlook đź”—︎

Mobile data acquisition is becoming increasingly important in terms of coping with rising work volumes and more differentiation due to market changes. An MDE scanner should be selected carefully and with deliberation. Even though prioritization varies from company to company, adequate functionality, ease of use and robustness of the devices are likely to be relevant for most industrial use scenarios and should be given special attention.

5 Reasons to buy a new Scanner Solution

With old barcode scanners, no matter if mobile or stationary, the disadvantages sooner or later will outweigh the benefits. Work processes in the warehouse or in production are made more difficult and slowed down, performance decreases. A timely changeover to more modern MDE solutions can prevent this. The following points provide initial orientation.

Smartphones vs. professional Mobile Device Scanners

In addition to professional MDE solutions, smartphones are increasingly being used as barcode scanners today. For less demanding tasks, they can play to their strengths. However, as requirements increase, their advantages increasingly fade - until they have to pass the baton to professional MDE devices. In the end, it’s careful consideration what counts.
